ទិវាអក្ខរកម្មអន្តរជាតិ ៨ កញ្ញា ត្រូវបានប្រារព្ធឡើងដំបូងឡើយដោយអង្គការយូនីស្កូ ក្នុងឆ្នាំ១៩៦៦ ដើម្បីក្រើនរំឭកដល់សហគមន៍អន្តរជាតិអំពីសារៈសំខាន់នៃអក្ខរកម្មសម្រាប់បុគ្គល សហគមន៍ សង្គម និងតម្រូវការផ្សេងៗ ដើម្បីកសាងសង្គមជាតិដែលមានអ្នកចេះដឹង។
ទិវាអក្ខរកម្មអន្តរជាតិ ឆ្នាំ២០២០ នឹងប្រព្រឹត្តទៅក្រោមប្រធានបទ “អក្ខរកម្មដើម្បីការសិក្សា និងការបង្រៀននៅក្នុងបរិបទវិបត្តិកូវីដ១៩ ឬបរិបទផ្សេងពីនេះ” ដោយផ្ដោតសំខាន់ទៅលើតួនាទីរបស់អ្នកអប់រំ និងការផ្លាស់ប្ដូរគរុកោសល្យបង្រៀន ពិសេសការសិក្សាពេញមួយជីវិត និងការអប់រំចំពោះយុវជន និងមនុស្សធំ។

The 8th of September was proclaimed as the International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1966 to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, societies, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies.
The theme for International Literacy Day 2020 is “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond” with a special focus on the role of educators and changing pedagogies. The theme highlights literacy learning from the perspective of lifelong learning and therefore, mainly focuses on youth and adults.
